Week 1 Discussion

Peer Review for Topic Proposal and Problem Statement

This week you will be submitting your first draft of your topic proposal. I have specific directions for this paper that you must follow in order for your final paper to be comprehensive. If you have not viewed the videos in the announcements for week 1 you need to go back and do so. You will not be able to complete your post correctly if you have not. The directions in the assignment are not specific enough. You must follow my directions in my videos. They are built on the assignment directions but with more guidance. Use the template below. You need to type in the document and use my example as a guide. You should have two screens open. One with the template and one of my paper. Read the directions for each section on the template and follow them. You should also use the rubric I have attached to check your own work before submitting. For your peer responses you will use the same rubric to evaluate two of your peer’s proposals. The handouts you need are below.

Helpful Hint:

When I am researching a new topic, I will read a minimum of three articles before I begin the writing process. This allows me to become familiar enough with the material to synthesize my own original ideas and prevents plagiarism. You are creating something new that no one has ever written before and you want to use facts and evidence to make your argument. This does take significant time, but this is how research works.

Week 2 Discussion

Outline

In week 2 you will prepare for your scientific and mathematical inquiry paper. For the discussion post you will follow my outline but fill in the content you will include for each section. In the Evidence of Connection section, you will need to make the link between your injustice and medical condition. In the three Medical Condition sections you need to elaborate on three medical conditions that falls under the medical condition in your research question and elaborate on how it effects your population. In the economic burden section, you will need to compressively discuss the impact your injustice has on the economy. For your peer responses I would like you to help your classmates find 2 reliable sources for their topics and give them some suggestions on content they can add to make their paper more comprehensive.

Please note: There is a rubric specific to discussions that differs from the peer review rubrics. Please take note of the different grading criteria by clicking the rubric in My Grades. There is an automatic 10% deduction of points for late postings.

Week 3 Discussion

Peer Review for Scientific and Mathematical/Analytical Inquiry Draft

Post a draft of your scientific and mathematical/analytical inquiry paper for peer review. You should also post your level 1 and level 2 research questions. Identify any questions or challenges you faced with the assignment, or mention something new you learned about the research question and inquiry paper process. Pose specific questions you would like your peers to address.

In your responses, provide your peers with specific feedback, constructive criticism, suggestions for improvement, and ideas for resources or support. Comment to a minimum of two peers. Remember that your feedback and support are important!

Posting directions: Title your post with your name (e.g., Jenny Smith Scientific/Math Inquiry Paper) and write in your submission or attach a document for peer review.

Week 4 Discussion

Cultural Inquiry of Values and Norms

In week 4 you will prepare for your ethical and cultural inquiry paper. I have created an outline to follow that requires you to specifically reflect on the evolution of the injustice in a comprehensive way. In the Origin of Injustice section, you will be including a background and discussing several causes of your injustice. In the Money Power and Control section you need to find an organization that benefits from maintain policies that contribute to the injustice. In the cultural section you need to focus on one societal norm that prevents changes. You will also need to find a specific bill or law that impacts your population. Finally, in the ethics section you will need to include concrete evidence that the profession of nursing has an obligation to be active patient advocate in protecting your population from the injustice that goes beyond bedside care. In this discussion board I would like you to come up with an outline that includes the specific topic you will discuss for each section.

Origin of Injustice

Background: what you will focus on here

Causes: list out the causes you will discuss (you may have more than 1)

Money power and control: what organization are you going to focus on and how do they maintain power?

Legislation: what bill will you discuss?

Culture: what social norm will you discuss?

Ethical Obligation: what is concrete evidence you will use to support the claim nurses have an obligation to help your population related to this injustice

Example for the bees

Origin of Injustice: Decline in Bee Populations

Background: history of the decline in bee populations (notice this is not the medical condition)

Cause: Nutritional stress

Cause: Loss of biodiversity

Cause: Intensive farming practices

Money power and control: Big Agribusiness

Lobbying

Consolidation of power

Revolving door

Industry funded research

Legislation: pollinator protection act

Culture: Standard American diet

Ethical Obligation: Profession of Dietetics

Including dietary recommendations that consider the envirmental is recognized by

The AND – professionals in field

The CDR – curriculum for students in dietetics programs

Collective grassroot movement within the profession

For your peer responses I would like you to help your classmates find 2 SCHOLARLY sources (that means from a peer reviewed journal) for their topics and give them some suggestions on content they can add to make their paper more comprehensive. Perhaps you find a peer reviewed article for one of their sections or know of another cause they can add to their origin of injustice section. Maybe you find a good site that discusses their law they want to include in the paper, or you know of another tactic that large corporations use to maintain control you can suggest they use in Money, Power and control Section. Responses need to be thought out and it needs to be obvious you spent time helping out your colleagues. This assistance is very common in the academic world and it is important to be supportive of fellow researchers.

Week 5 Discussion

Peer Review for Cultural and Ethical Perspective Inquiry Draft

This week you will be posting your second half for your paper for peer review. What I am looking for in your responses is for you to give feedback using the rubric. You should be looking for informal writing (use of personal pronouns, speaking directly to the reader), missing citations, incorrect and so on. The purpose is to help your peers improve their paper by being a second pair of eyes for them.

Week 6 Discussion

Media/Technology Practice and Final Paper Progress Report

This week you will post your abstract and conclusion here for peer review. Make sure to use the rubric to evaluate 2 of your peers. Before submitting you need to view the videos in the announcement, so you know how to use the templates for each of the sections. These two papers are very formulaic and require much reflection to complete correctly.

Week 7 Discussion

Screen cast

This week, you will practice producing a screencast video presentation that allows you to report your progress on the final paper while also preparing you to build a quality final presentation for the course.

A screen–cast video (for this course) should be understood as a recording of a PowerPoint (or Prezi) in Slideshow Mode, narrated/presented by you within a picture-in-picture video.

For this week’s main post, prepare a screencast video by following these steps:

1. Build a three–slide PowerPoint (or Prezi) presentation that includes text and graphics. Outline your answers to the following questions:

What are some specific questions you have concerning the final argument paper?

What is your time–management plan for compiling and editing your final paper?

What parts of your final paper do you anticipate will take the most time and attention? For example:

Incorporating instructor feedback in your perspective papers

Reworking the perspective papers into one cohesive paper

Writing the introduction, conclusion, or abstract

APA formatting

Revising for grammar, spelling, and punctuation
