In this Discussion, you begin establishing valuable connections with colleagues by sharing personal reflections on your journey to this MHA program and where you hope your degree will take you in the future. You also consider current trends in health care and how this degree program will help you address issues and/or challenges as a health care administrator.

To prepare for this Discussion, review the Learning Resources assigned in this module. Reflect on the influence and value of health care in your life. Think about the various experiences you have had as a patient or consumer, a citizen or community member, and/or a professional in a related field. Why is health care delivery important, from your personal perspective as well as from a societal perspective?

Next, consider what motivated you to pursue an MHA degree at Walden University at this specific time in your life. What do you expect to gain through your work in this degree program?

Review the trends presented in the Learning Resources. Which of these trends would you most like to learn about and address as a student at Walden and as a health care administrator? How might this degree prepare you to tackle the issues or challenges presented by current health care trends? How can you move your career forward? Beyond participating in this MHA program, what other options will help you accomplish your short- and long-term career goals? What resources are available to you when you do want to make a career move? Joining professional organizations can be an invigorating way to learn about various aspects of health care administration and to network with others who are knowledgeable about the field.

To prepare for this Discussion, review the list of professional organizations in the Learning Resources. If you are an international student, research professional organizations in your country that may be a good fit for your interests.

Select one professional organization that you find particularly appealing. Visit the organization’s website and evaluate the resources that are available to the public and those that are available to members only. If possible, locate a job posting on the organization’s website that relates to your career interests.

Reflect on your career aspirations and think about the potential benefits of joining professional organizations. If you have been, or are currently, a member of a professional organization, reflect on your experiences and what you have gained through participation in the organization.

Plutarch once said, “The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled.” When it comes to business, our mentors are the ones who kindle that fire. They inspire us, help us through tough situations, and guide our paths

In career development, as in other aspects of life, there are many paths you can take to get where you aim to be. A mentor or business coach can help guide your path and facilitate your professional growth and development. Martin Zwilling, writing for Forbes magazine, distinguishes mentoring from coaching:

Expect a mentor to tell you what you need to hear, not like a friend who may tell you what you want to hear. A business coach is focused on helping you with generic skills, whereas a mentor’s aim is to teach you based on specific situations. The same person can’t be all of these. (Zwilling, 2014)

Working with a mentor or coach can help you make wise decisions and avoid some of the mistakes that may impede your progress. In this Discussion, you consider the potential benefits of mentoring or coaching for your professional development and examine the characteristics of each type of relationship. You also develop a plan for forming a relationship with a mentor or coach in the near future.

As you prepare for this Discussion, reflect on any previous experiences you have had with professional mentoring or coaching. Have you benefitted from a coaching or mentoring situation? If so, how? If you have not personally received mentoring or coaching, think about how these types of relationships have helped other people you know.

Consider the distinction between mentoring and coaching. Which of these would be most helpful to you at this point in time? Explore the relevant items in the Learning Resources and think of other resources that could help you identify and connect with an experienced professional. Identify one source that you think will be especially helpful given your career interests and professional development needs. Consider how you would establish a relationship with a mentor or a coach.

Creating Work-Life Balance

The commitment to achieving work-life balance reflects “the need for equilibrium across multiple areas of life” (Tajlili, 2014, p. 257). While it can be daunting to manage time and resource constraints, many busy students and professionals are able to prioritize and schedule their commitments in satisfying and personally meaningful ways. What are their secrets to success and what can be learned from them?

To prepare for this Discussion, consider the challenges you are likely to encounter as a student in this online MHA program and as a health care administrator.

Review the Learning Resources related to work-life balance, including Tajlili (2014), Evans, Carney, and Wilkinson (2013), Giberson and Miklos (2014), and Perlow (2014). Analyze the information related to personal values and priorities, time management, and health and wellness in terms of your own needs and commitments. Based on your reading and reflection, identify an aspect of work-life balance that you would like to investigate further by conducting library research.

Review the Learning Resources related to conducting research using the Walden Library. Use the Walden Library to locate at least one peer-reviewed article that relates to your chosen aspect of work-life balance. Select an article that provides valuable information to help you manage the multiple demands you are likely to experience as a graduate student and as a working professional. For example, the article you select may illustrate potential benefits of work-life balance, describe common challenges, or feature strategies for maintaining balance. Communication for Health Care Administrators

Communication is an essential, yet often challenging, part of health care management. Health care administrators, managers, and leaders are responsible for facilitating communication with an array of stakeholders, including patients and families; physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals; board members; and the broader community. Issues such as health literacy, high-stress environments, and vulnerable populations may impact communication, and health care administrators must be able to use a variety of communication skills and channels to express themselves and their organization’s message. Given the diversity among individuals and groups with whom health care administrators must communicate, it is important to select the best communication skills and channels based on the purpose, context, and receiver of the communication.

In this Discussion, you select a case provided in the Learning Resources. You examine some of the business communication challenges presented that illustrate frequently encountered situations in health care organizations. You consider health care administrators’ responsibilities for facilitating communication with diverse groups of internal and external stakeholders. You also consider strategies and selection of appropriate communication channels for specific situations.

Academic and Career Goals Elevator Speech

As a health care administrator, you will be called upon to clearly and succinctly introduce yourself to many different people. It is helpful to prepare an “elevator speech” to express essential information about yourself and your goals. The term elevator speech is used in business to denote a short, simple message you can convey while positioned next to someone you would like to meet in an elevator. In reality, you may use an elevator speech when you meet people in a variety of settings and situations.

Recall the goals you identified in your Professional Development Plan for the Module 5 Assignment.

Review the Walden University “Vision and Mission Statements” web page including the vision and mission statements for the College of Health Sciences (located in this module’s Learning Resources).

Also review the “Learning Outcomes – Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA)” web page located in this module’s Learning Resources. Select one or two that are particularly significant for your career aspirations.

Review the Dardis (2013) and Johnson (2012) articles, listed in the Learning Resources, for information on how to craft an effective elevator speech.

Prepare an approximately 30-second elevator speech in which you promote your strengths as a health care administrator and explain how your goals exemplify the distinguishing characteristics of Walden University and the MHA program.

Communicate your elevator speech to friends or family members. The tone of your voice and your body language are just as important as the words you say, so ask for feedback and practice until you are able to clearly and confidently deliver your elevator speech.

Assignment: Exploring Career Options in Health Care Administration in Your Community

Where do you envision yourself working as a health care administrator? How might your skills and interests be applied in a variety of health care settings? The purpose of this Assignment is to get you thinking about the many types of organizations where health care administrators, managers, or leaders may work. To prepare for this experiential Assignment, please conduct an investigation of the different settings and types of facilities in your community that contribute to the health care system. As the landscape of health care changes, delivery of health care services now involves many types of organizations, including retail pharmacies, medical equipment suppliers, clinics, diagnostic facilities, freestanding research labs, assisted living and long-term care facilities, third-party administrators, hospitals, and so forth. As you survey the types of health care services in your community, consider the different types of facilities that interest you as you develop your career goals.

For this Assignment, you prepare a PowerPoint presentation that presents a summary of some of the organizations you discover in your community. Whenever possible, please photograph the different organizations and facilities; include these photos to create visual interest and tell the story of the facilities and organizations in your community. Your presentation needs to include detail on the size and scope of the organization’s business. For example, you should include whether it for-profit or nonprofit; whether it is part of a large health system or a retail chain; and whether it is a family business, a small independent company, or something else.

Based on the various types of organizations you identify in your explorations, select at least two different organizations that you believe best fit your career interests and goals, leadership style, and professional competencies based on what you discovered about yourself from the HumanMetrics self-assessment activity. Include a discussion in your speaker notes of the unique competencies that you believe are most important for effective leadership in each of your selected organizations.

Use the information provided in this module’s Learning Resources for creating engaging PowerPoint presentations. Remember that excellent presentations have a strong visual component and highlight key points. Include in the notes section of each slide narrative details that you would use when presenting your slides. The notes section is where you can add more detail about the various organizations you found in your investigation of your community.

Apply the principles of scholarly writing to summarize the article you selected. Include at least one in-text citation and the reference for the article. Your summary should be approximately 150 words.

Next, review the article summary you included in your initial Discussion posting. You may edit or revise your writing based on insights you gained through reading your colleagues’ summaries or reviewing the Learning Resources. For this Assignment, include only your approximately 150-word article summary (i.e., do not include the explanation of how the information in the article can be applied, which you wrote for the Discussion). Include at least one in-text citation and the reference for the article.

At this point, you should have one document that includes your two article summaries (one paragraph per article) and your references. One reference will be from your library research and one reference will be from the articles provided in this module’s Learning Resources.
