you?
Do you see any kinks in its armor? Are there any issues that concern you?
How does NUCOR’s employee safety, health,
& wellness programs support for the organization’s strategy, corporate
values, and organizational culture?
What possible HR measurements/metrics can
you identify in the Safety program?

Week 5
Discussion
According to almost all estimates, union
membership has either remained flat over the last three years or declined. If
that trend continues, what effect do you think it will have on the field of
human resources? Specifically, how might human capital issues in the workplace
be impacted by flat or declining union membership?

Week 7
Discussion
When filling open positions in an organization,
staffing professionals have a variety of sources to identify and attract
applicants. These options fall into two
categories, or pools: internal and
external.
Research to find:
The advantages and disadvantages of each of
these options,
The situations in which one option would be
better than the other, and then
Explain your rationale for this decision,
using your research findings.
Find at least two scholarly sources
addressing this issue. When researching,
it is good to find sources that provide varying perspectives on the same topic.

Week 8
Discussion
You have just been hired as a Human
Resource Manager in a small, but rapidly growing organization with 160
employees. During the interview and
selection process, the CEO stated that the reason an HRM Manager was needed was
because there was an increase in customer complaints concerning errors in
shipments of orders. Errors included
incorrect products and quantities, as well as increases in defective
products. The errors seemed to be
random; in other words, customers did not know if and when they would receive a
correct and complete order or one with missing and/or incorrect or defective
products.
You have one non-exempt HR clerical-type
employee in the department.
Obviously, this is an important problem for
a growing start-up organization. Where
would you start to determine what is wrong?
What would you do to quickly, but effectively, correct the problem?
Find at least two scholarly sources
addressing this issue. When researching,
it is good to find sources that provide varying perspectives on the same topic.

Week 10 Discussion
Pick a human resource task or function that
tends to be time consuming for HR practitioners. Discuss the pros and cons of
automating that task or function. In your response, be sure to consider both
organizational and employee perspectives.

Week 12 Discussion
It would be useful to know which activities
this semester seemed most helpful.
Specific information such as that is not routinely captured in the
standard student evaluation. I won’t
read your feedback until course grades have been filed.

Week 3
Assignment 1
Analyze the BT Green case that is
separately posted in the Week 3 Assignment folder. Write a memo to the CEO, explaining:
1)
what legal risk the company has regarding Mr. Banks’ complaint. In doing this,
a. Identify
the specific laws that may pertain to this situation.
b. State
the key legal criteria for each law.
c. Analyze
whether the details of the case meet the legal criteria, then explain how they
do or do not fit.
d. State
your conclusion about the legal risk.
2)
what your recommendation is for handling the case. In doing this,
a. State
your recommendation.
b. Explain
your rationale for the recommendation.
c. Identify
the advantages for doing it.
d. Identify
the disadvantages or risks for doing it.
Presentation criteria
The CEO values your opinion but also likes
to know that it is well-grounded; so, use APA to cite appropriate sources for
ideas you borrow, for support you use, and for key terms in your analysis. He also expects excellent writing from his
staff. This means it should be clearly
stated, carry the appropriate tone, be grammatically correct, and be sensitive
to his time constraints. Write
concisely, limiting your response to a maximum of 2 double-spaced pages of
text.

Week 6
Assignment 2
Part A (Applied Research – 40% of the
assignment score) – This is the task that you received in Week 4.
Located in Illinois for the last 8 years,
your organization is a medium-sized company in the medical supplies
industry. The Vice President of
Operations stopped in your office to discuss a recent loss of staff. He said he has lost 3 key leaders in the last
4 months. In addition to 2 more
employees he fired, several frontline workers have quit. As a good HR Director, you recognize that it
would be wise to do a complete investigation of the turnover.
In a maximum of 2 double-spaced pages,
explain:
a) How
would you evaluate whether the experienced turnover is a problem?
b) What
data/metrics would you gather and consider from the HRIS (Human Resource
Information System) and/or external sources?
Consult additional sources in the HR
literature, beyond the course readings, to formulate your response.
Part B (BT Green Case, 20% of the
assignment value)
Refer to the BT Green case again, the one
you received in Week 3. You had a chance
to discuss the legal risk for the organization in the first assignment. You’ve responded to the CEO and received
feedback about your assessment. The
company decided to let Mr. Banks go. Considering the material you’ve read in
Weeks 1-6, now respond to the terminated employee.
1. Describe
the desired outcome (or goal) for your response.
2. Identify
the issues you will consider in crafting your response.
3. Explain
how you will convey the information to the employee (i.e., in writing,
verbally, through technology, in person) and why you chose this method.
4. Write
what you will say.
Limit your response to a maximum of 2
double-spaced pages of text.
Part C (Knowledge of Weeks 4-6
Readings) (40% of assignment value)
Please answer the following questions
within a maximum of 2 double-spaced pages.
Note the limit requires you to be concise in synthesizing all the input
from the classroom material and any external literature you gather.
1. Assume
an organization wants to gauge the success of its total rewards program. Discuss at least two possible metrics or
outcomes it might use. Be sure to
explain why you chose the metrics you discuss and how they are indicative of a
successful total rewards program.
2. Given
what you have learned about employee relations and labor relations, explain
whether it is possible for an HR practitioner to be an effective advocate for
both employees and the organization at the same time? Why or why not?
HRMD610
Issues and Practices in Human Resource Management
Week 11
Assignment 3
1. Explain
how each of the HR staffing, training & development, and performance
management functional areas relates to turnover. Consider:
How does turnover impact the HR function? How does the HR function influence
turnover? (Weight = 35% of the exam)
2. Using
one of the steps in the staffing (recruitment and selection) function, identify
an action that could increase diversity in the organization’s labor pool. Explain how/why that change can be effective,
using support from the literature. Then, explain the impact an increase in
diversity could have on the organization’s training & development and
performance management functions.
(Weight = 35% of the exam)
3. Your
organization is planning a major organizational change that will impact a
number of employees. Some departments will need additional employees with
specialized skills and other departments will need fewer employees, leading to
a reduction in force (RIF). As the head of the HR department, what steps will
you take in planning for both the increased need for employees with specialized
skills and the RIF? (Weight = 30% of the
exam)

Week 9 paper
Research Briefing
Note: Submissions will not be accepted
after grades for this assignment have been posted. Alternate assignments are not available.
Content Requirements (85% of assignment
value)
Look at the Conceptual Model of HR. Choose one area you find interesting. Based on your own experiences and readings,
what would you like to see happen in that area?
For instance, in Total Rewards/Compensation, maybe you’d like to have
paid family medical leave. In
performance management, perhaps you would like to have a particular type of
appraisal process. Or, if you’re looking
at employee relations, maybe you’d like to adopt a teleworking policy at an
organization. Maybe you see a change in
the labor pool, law, or technology that will impact your chosen HR area and you
want to address how such change will be incorporated.
Once you’ve identified a specific area to
explore, ask: If I had to propose this
idea to executive management, how could I address the pro vs. con questions:
–How might it impact a hypothetical
organization’s strategic direction and operations? Why would an organization want or not want to
do this?
–How might it impact employees? Why would employees want or not want
this?
–What impact would it have on other parts
of the HR system? Would other dimensions
of HR need to change in order for my proposal to work? What support might be needed from the other
HR areas? For instance, would we have to
pay more, revise job descriptions, train staff, or lay-off people?
–How would we measure whether my proposed
idea succeeded?
–What are real organizations doing about
this? Give at least one specific,
referenced example.
When answering the content questions, be
sure:
____ The work is original. Remember that you may not submit work that
was created for any other class, including a previous semester of HRMD
610. This was part of the Academic
Integrity Pledge you signed at the beginning of the term. The professor reserves the right to submit
student papers to determine the originality percentage at his or her
discretion. A good rule of thumb is that
no more than 20% of a paper should be from direct quotes.
_____ The content is substantial and
represents a significant literature review.
In other words, the material extends substantially beyond the course
readings. The issues discussed are key
facets of the topic.
_____ Most of the references represent
scholarly sources. Plan to use 8-12
sources for the paper. (Use UMUC’s
library. The librarians are very
helpful.)
_____ Since they are not vetted, commercial
websites (.com) are not used unless the reason is to report the organization’s
own policies or strategies as an example to illustrate a point.
_____ Because the HRM field has been
changing rapidly in the last few decades, sources published prior to 2009
should be avoided, except when some brief history of the topic is necessary.
_____Points are well supported with logic,
data, and/or examples.
_____Conclusions demonstrate integrative,
critical thinking.
Presentation (15% of the assignment value)
_____The introduction tells the reader the
purpose of the research and the agenda for the paper. (Do NOT use an abstract.)
_____ Special terms are defined.
_____Points are logically sequenced; the
paper is well-organized.
_____The summary recaps the key points and
provides psychological closure to the discussion.
_____Technical aspects of writing (i.e.,
grammar, sentence structure, and spelling) are correct.
_____Academic style (i.e., appropriate
diction, clarity, smooth transitions, and an audience-oriented approach) is
demonstrated. Note: This is a research paper, thus please do not:
• Write
in the 1st or 2nd person (I, me, my, we, us, you, your, our, etc.)
• Share
personal stories or workplace situations
• Express
your beliefs, feelings, or opinions on the subject

_____The body of the paper does not exceed
8 double-spaced pages. (The page limit
asks you to think about what is most important and to communicate it
concisely. This is a valuable business
skill since managers often have time to read only the executive summaries or
the first page of a resume! Note: This does not mean that substance should be
sacrificed; it just means it should be presented concisely.)
_____ A maximum of one table is used, and
only if it is required to provide critical information.
_____ A maximum of one bulleted list is
used, if needed.
_____Citations are given for non-original
material, using APA format for the in-text citation as well as the reference
list.
Administrative Preparation
_____The paper is posted by the deadline in
the proper place, using a Word file format.
Per the syllabus, a grade penalty can apply if the document is late.
_____The title page contains your name and
class section.
_____ An abstract page is not used.
_____Headers and footers are not used. (They can make it difficult to provide
feedback.)
_____A 12-point font is used, and margins
are reasonable.
_____Pages are numbered.
_____ The title page, the body, and the
reference listing are not followed by any other appendices.
