(a) In the past decade, headlines reporting the
tragic stories of a young person’s suicide death linked in some way to bullying
have become regrettably common. There is so much pain and suffering associated
with each of these events, affecting individuals, families, communities and our
society as a whole. There is an increasing national outcry to “do something”
about the problem of bullying and suicide.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other violence
prevention partners are seeking ways to develop intervention programs in the
public high schools aimed at sensitizing students, parents, faculty and staff
to the risks of suicide and the “warning” signs of suicide in
adolescents. Your task is to help develop an intervention program that helps
involve students, parents, faculty and staff to identify the causes of bullying
and prevent suicide among adolescents who are being bullied.
(b) The obesity epidemic has become a major
health concern, especially with a three-fold increase in the last three decades
among school-aged children (Office of Health Assessment and Epidemiology,
2011). In fact, many children in low
socioeconomic household are growing up with fast-food as a staple food source
in their diet that greatly contributes towards childhood obesity. Furthermore,
childhood obesity has a direct correlation with adult obesity by further
developing into various health issues (National Heart, Lung, and Blood
Institute [NHLBI], 2013). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
is seeking ways to develop intervention programs in the public elementary
schools and the corresponding community around the public elementary schools
aimed at sensitizing students, faculty, parents and staff to the problems of
childhood obesity and promote both healthy food choices and exercise that is
more physical. Your task is to help develop an intervention program that helps
involve students, parents, faculty and staff to identify the causes of obesity,
promote healthy food choices and increase physical exercise.
(c) Fearing for their careers, many military
service members keep quiet about their mental health problems—and their silent
suffering is taking a toll on our military readiness. A fifth of people
returning from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq are reporting symptoms of
post-traumatic stress disorder or major depression, and only about half seek
treatment (Dingfelder, 2009). In addition to the human cost, the wave of
service members with mental illness will cost the country about $6.2 billion in
direct medical care and lost productivity in just the first two years after
they return from deployment (Dingfelder, 2009). The Department of Defense is
seeking ways to develop intervention programs aimed at military service
members, military families, military officers and staff to the problems of not
seeking treatment for psychological trauma such as Post-Traumatic Stress
Disorder. Your task is to help develop
an intervention program that helps involve military service members, military
families, military officers and staff to identify the symptoms of psychological
distress among military service members and help reduce the stigma of seeking
mental health treatment among this population.
