Try to identify a simple, specific goal (e.g. to make sure you vote this November 8th, to start exercising regularly, to get an A on a specific paper/exam/project, to take a trip to somewhere, to spend more time outdoors, to finish reading that book you have been wanting to read, to connect more regularly with someone important in your life). Example: My goal is to connect my sister more regularly. My goal is to take a trip to Spain. 2. Identify a response (goal-directed behavior) that will help you attain the goal you described in the previous question and describe it here as succinctly as possible. Example: If my goal is to connect more regularly with my sister, a response that will help me attain that goal is calling her more regularly. If my goal is to travel to Spain, a response that will help me attain that goal is saving money to afford the trip. 3 3. Write an implementation intention: Form a mental link between a situational cue and the goal-directed behavior and complete the sentence, “If [situational cue], then I will [perform response/goal-directed behavior]. Examples: If it is Sunday evening after dinner (cue), I will call my sister (goal-directed behavior). When I get paid from work, I will put 5% of my paycheck into my savings account to save for the trip to Spain. 4. Write an implementation intention to address an anticipated interruption, temptation, or distraction: Anticipate a potential challenge, temptation, or distraction that might come up and form an intention of what you will do if and when it happens. Write an implementation intention for this using the same “If [situational cue], then [perform goal-directed behavior]. Example: If I am tempted to turn on the TV right after dinner on Sunday, then I will sit in another room away from the TV and call my sister instead. If I am tempted to eat lunch out, I will eat my lunch from home instead to save money.
