Nursing Reflection – Part 1

An important requirement of this course is writing your own personal philosophy statement of nursing. This philosophy statement will be included in your final Portfolio for this course and will be part of your grade for the Portfolio. To help you to write your philosophy of nursing we have listed eight (8) questions below to stimulate your thinking about what you believe about nursing and what you value in nursing. Please respond to the eight (8) questions below writing your responses in complete sentences. For this assignment, you can list the question followed by your response. For example,

Nursing is….., and then you give your written response.

When you submit this Nursing Philosophy as part of your final Portfolio (in week 8) you will delete the typed question and your philosophy will read as one continuous document. You may address the topics covered in each question in paragraph form. An example of a Nursing Philosophy in final form is included in the electronic Portfolio posted on this course site (see Richard Hedstrom, RN Nurse Portfolio).

Please describe an event/lesson that occurred in your nursing education or practice that you never want to forget. This could be about an interaction with a patient/co-worker/or patient’s family member that did not go well, or a situation that went extremely well. Describe what you learned from this event.

Please identify a nurse theorist who influences your practice. Write at least 3-4 sentences describing the basic elements of this nurse theorist’s theory/model and how this theory relates to your practice of nursing.

Your Portfolio should have a cover page (with your name, the course number and name, and the date) and a table of contents. Please refer to the Grading Rubric for details on how this activity will be graded. This assignment is due on day 7.

Resume

As part of preparing the required documents for your final Portfolio, please submit your resume to your faculty for review by day 6 of this week. The resume will be returned to you with comments and you will submit your revised version in your final Portfolio. This assignment will not be graded during this week of the course — this assignment is graded as part of the final Portfolio in week 8.

Week 4 Assignment  

Clinical Exemplar or Narrative

Write a one- to two- (1–2) page narrative about a clinical situation where you believe your nursing care made a difference in the care of the patient, or describe a patient care situation where you missed something important or learned a critical lesson that influenced or changed your practice going forward. Review the Yale New Haven Hospital: Clinical Nursing Exemplar Guidelines as a resource in writing this clinical narrative. Submit this assignment for review and comments by your faculty. This assignment will not be graded in week 4. Once you receive this assignment back from your faculty you will revise it and submit it as part of your final Portfolio in week 8 of this course.

Week 5 Assignment  

Nursing Reflection – Part 1

After completing the reading of chapter 7, review of the PPT presentation, and viewing the Healthy People 2020 website and executive summary (leading health indicators), answer the following two questions:

Select one of the health promotion or health belief models identified in chapter 7 of your textbook and apply it to a situation you’ve experienced in assisting a patient to change an unhealthy behavior or health practice.

Choose one health indicator from the list of initiatives in Healthy People 2020 that you believe is important to the health of Americans providing your rationale for its importance. Suggest additional strategies to deal with this issue or preventative measures that can be taken to promote better management of this health issue.

Please write one to two paragraphs for each question and cite at least two references in your responses to each of the questions.

Updated Nursing Philosophy

Be sure to make all revisions in your initial eight (8) question reflection assignment from week 1 that have been suggested by your faculty. Remove the statement of the question and write your philosophy statement as a continuous narrative in paragraph form. Submit the revised version of your philosophy statement to your faculty for review and approval. Your faculty will convey to you whether additional revisions are required or whether the version submitted can be included in your final Portfolio. This assignment will not be graded in week 7.

Nursing Portfolio – Part 1

Please review the Grading Rubric for this assignment. Create the following tabbed sections in your portfolio: Philosophy and Theorist Section, Educational Section, Clinical Narratives Section, and Career Planning Section. In each of these sections, including the items identified in the Grading Rubric. You may also want to review the Portfolio example posted in Week 01 of this course (Week 01 Learning Materials, at the very bottom). Your Portfolio should have a cover page (with your name, the course number and name, and the date) and a table of contents.
