Unit 1 Seminar

This week’s Seminar addresses the multitude of career options in the legal field. We will also review the Syllabus and discuss what will be covered in this course, requirements, and expectations. The Seminar also provides an opportunity to ask questions of the instructor either on the course expectations, the reading, the discussions, or any other topic that is relevant to the course.

Your attendance at the weekly Seminar for this course is very important. The Seminar is an excellent source of information and explanation of the weekly material in this course. However, if you are unable to attend the Seminar, you can still learn the information that was provided and also earn the Seminar points. In order to earn the Seminar points, you must complete an alternative assignment and submit it as a Word document to the Dropbox within one week of the Seminar. The professor has the right to reject late alternative assignments. The alternative assignment must provide at least a clear synopsis of the material covered at the Seminar along with your analysis of that material. It should be no less than two pages and no longer than three pages and must be submitted within seven days of the missed Seminar.

 Participation in the Seminar is a very important part of this course. It is the one chance that you have each week to interact with your classmates and your instructor real-time. Seminar is a great opportunity to cover course material in a fun and dynamic forum where you can discuss what you have learned in each unit and ask questions about topics that you do not yet understand. Topic: During the Seminar we will discuss the following topics:

What is the law?

What are the historical origins of the law?

How do philosophical views influence the law?

What are the categories of law?

What are the sources of law?

What are the basic elements of criminal and civil cases?

This week, a portion of the seminar will consist of a virtual field trip to the Library, where you will learn tips and strategies for using this vital resource. Research skills are very important in the legal profession and this unit will get you started in building these skills by completing the Learning Activities and participating in this virtual field trip. The Library has many law-related and career-related materials that will be useful to you as you progress in your academic program. Please complete the Unit 2 Learning Activities prior to the Seminar and bring any questions you may have to benefit the most from this virtual field trip experience.
