Part 1

Unit 2.1 Discussion: Building Blocks for Creating a Virtual Team

Let’s assume that your organization has decided to introduce virtual work. You have been asked to represent your division on a committee that will present its findings to executive management next month. Your classmates are representing their respective divisions.

After reviewing this week’s reading resources, identify and expand upon three (3) essential building blocks for creating a successful virtual team. After reviewing your classmates’ posts, reply to at least two of them either validating or arguing against their suggestions. In either case, be sure to bring in at least two external resources (other than the textbook) to back up your arguments.

Unit 2.2 Discussion: Organizational Climate for Creating a Virtual Team

This discussion has three parts:

Part 1: Think about your current or past employer. If you have yet to explore the corporate world, feel free to ask others around you. Do you think implementing a virtual work environment is feasible there? Why or why not? Please elaborate on your answer.

Part 2: After reviewing this week’s reading resources, identify and expand upon three (3) essential components required within an organization where a virtual team can thrive.

Part 3: After reviewing your classmates’ posts, reply to at least two of them either validating or arguing against their suggestions. Unit 3.1 Discussion: Remote work vs. Virtual work

Part 1: Let’s assume that your company is thinking about implementing a remote work environment. You, along with 10 of your peers, have been invited to a meeting to share your views on a remote work environment. In this meeting, you are expected to share your point of view on the viability of remote work for your organization. Do you think a remote environment can work for your organization? List at least three (3) reasons to justify your views. Feel free to assume the type of industry and nature of your employees’ work.

Part 2: After making your initial post, review your classmates’ posts. Find posts with different points of view (compared to yours) and offer your support or argue against them. After reading your classmates’ posts, do you feel the same way about implementing virtual work? What would you change about your initial post, if anything? Unit 3.2 Discussion: Virtual Leader Competencies

Part 1: Review eight virtual leader competencies from this week’s eBook reading. After your review, list the top three competencies you feel you are proficient in and list the top three competencies you feel that you can improve upon. Be sure to add your experience, examples and/or views to bolster your argument.

Part 2: Put on a manager’s hat and review your classmates’ posts, especially their comments about needing improvement. Reply to at least two of your classmates offering your suggestions on ways they can improve upon their three (3) competencies. Feel free to bring in external research in your post. Your suggestions must be unique and insightful. Be sure to maintain a professional tone when offering opposing views.

Unit 4.1 Discussion: Threefold Path Model

Part I: Review this week’s eBook reading and outline the attributes of the Threefold Path model for developing high-performance teams. After documenting those attributes in your initial post, tell us where you think your current or past employer is situated in this model. Tell us what organizational steps you will recommend to reach the final stage of the Threefold Path model. If your organization is already on the final path, then tell us what specific steps were taken by the management to get to the final path. If you have yet to join the workforce, then ask your friends or family member for their views on their employer or research organizational structure of a company using resources on the Internet or Post Library.

Part II: After making your initial post, review your classmates’ posts. Find posts with a different course of action (compared to yours) and offer your support or argue against them. After reading your classmates’ posts, do you feel the same way about the initial approach? What would you change about your approach, if anything? Your suggestions must be unique and insightful. Unit 4.2 Discussion: Virtual Team Trust

Part I: You have been asked to engage in a consulting assignment. Acme Corporation, a web design and consulting firm, migrated its operation from in-person to a virtual environment. Every one of their 120 employees now works remotely. Soon after the change, executive management noticed a huge issue. Mangers were not happy because they could not keep “an eye” on their employees when they were working inside a building. Employees reported that they are disengaged because they could not deliver their work on time citing a lack of commitments from their fellow employees. After reading this week’s e-book reading and written web resources, what specific strategies would you come up with to build trust among Acme’s employees?

Part II: After making your initial post, review your classmates’ posts. Find at least two posts where organizations are on different path compared to your organization and either offer or extrapolate specific suggestions to reach the third phase of the Threefold Path model. Recommending Virtual Tools

Part I: After reviewing this unit’s e-book reading, select three (3) categories (i.e. email, IM, and voice) and provide the name of the software you would recommend for each category (i.e., Gmail is recommended for email) for your client who is operating in the healthcare industry and has 650 remote employees. Be sure to justify your selection for each of the tools you are recommending (i.e., why Gmail is the best email solution).

Part II: After making your initial post, review your classmates’ posts. Find at least two posts where different categories are discussed, list your recommended tools for those categories, and provide justification for your recommendation.

Interviewing for a Virtual Position

Part I: You have been invited to a panel to interview a few candidates for a Remote Customer Service Associate position in your organization. In your initial post, come up with three (3) interview questions when hiring a virtual team member for your organization. Be sure to explain your logic behind your questions. In other words, explain why you are asking your specific questions, what are you hoping to hear in candidates’ reply, and what are you trying to assess from candidates’ answers.

Part II: After making your initial post, review your classmates’ posts. Find at least two posts and analyze the interview questions. Now, answer those three (3) questions as if you are applying for that position. Be sure to articulate your answer.
