(1) Ask 3-5 people the following questions. The questions are open ended so feel free to allow the person you are interviewing to bounce around the topics. Your goal is to get a sense of how individuals talk about politics and their comfort level in different settings.

(2) Discuss your findings. How and under what circumstances do people talk about politics? Were people generally comfortable or uncomfortable talking about politics? Why do they feel that way? What surprised you about the responses?

  • What does “talking about politics” mean to you? When you talk about politics, what topics do you usually discuss?
  • Are you generally comfortable or uncomfortable talking about politics? If you are uncomfortable, why do you feel that way?
  • Are you more comfortable discussing politics online, at work, or at home with close friends and family?
  • Are you comfortable or uncomfortable talking about the following topics: (Remind your respondent that you are not asking for their opinion on these topics, you just want to know if they are comfortable talking about it. Unless of course you don’t mind hearing their opinion.)
    • The economy and jobs
    • Education, for example, teacher salaries or free college education
    • The 2020 election, voter fraud, voting laws
    • Civil rights issues like police shootings or confederate statues
    • Politicians such as Donald Trump, Joe Biden, or Nancy Pelosi
