Intelligence analysis has been blamed for many intelligence failures in the 20th and 21st centuries (1940s to present). In Unit VII, you will be tasked with writing a research paper on a past intelligence failure.
Examples would be as follows:
Fall of Berlin Wall (1989),
Bay of Pigs,
- Attacks on Pearl Harbor,
- Operation Barbarossa (1941), or
- Attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001.
- For this unit assignment after you have selected a topic (Attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001), you will include an introduction of your topic. You will then conduct research to construct an annotated bibliography.
- Additionally, you are to present a brief history of the intelligence failure or event on your topic (one to two paragraphs). Ensure you address the following items:
U.S. intelligence community and intelligence analysis involved, which led to the failure;
U.S. intelligence community partners before, during, and after the event; intelligence cycle and how thinking about intelligence led to the failure; and
each of the intelligence cycle processes used or not used in the failure or event.
