Philosophy Question

Jackson offers an example of a woman (Mary) raised in an environment which lacks all colors (except white, black and gray). Mary is also a brilliant neuroscientist who knows everything physical (including biological, neurobiological and chemical) there is to know about color and color perception. What, according to Jackson, happens when Mary first sees something red? How does Jackson use this example to construct an argument against physicalism? (Make sure to identify all the premises that Jackson needs for his argument.) What, exactly, is the conclusion of this argument? Lewis responds to Jackson’s argument by arguing that it confuses knowing facts with knowing how to perform an activity (having an ability). How does this undermine the argument? Make sure you explain the difference between knowing how to do something and knowing a fact. Are there other problems with Jackson’s argument? Make sure to describe your criticisms in as much detail as you can. Suppose Jackson’s argument is sound. What, then, would be the relation between mental facts and physical facts?
