Write a 3-4 page double spaced paper on one of the following topics. 1) Come up with a Gettier case. Do you think Gettier cases illuminate the idea of knowledge in a useful way? Why or why not?
- 2) Explain what Craig means by a “state of nature” account of knowledge, and what advantages he thinks it has. Do you prefer this approach to epistemology to Descartes’ foundationalism or Wittgenstein’s holism? Defend one of these approaches against the others.
- 3) What does Williams mean by “Sincerity” and “Accuracy” and why does he distinguish them? Do you agree that these are the two main epistemic virtues we need, on a state of nature account of the function of truth? Why or why not?
- 4) Give an example — other than the one Mills himself uses — in which “white ignorance” affects the way white people tend even to perceive some group of non-white people. What do you think is more important to the way white ignorance works — skewed perception, or what Fricker calls “testimonial injustice”?
- 5) What is testimonial injustice? Do you think this is a distinctive kind of injustice, irreducible to political or economic discrimination? Why or why not?
- 6) Are Fricker and Williams right to suggest that trustful conversation is essential to our sense of our own identity (pp.52-56)? Why or why not? Explain with an example what this might mean.
7) What does Fricker mean by “non-doxastic” elements of prejudice (pp.36-7)? Do you agree with her that these are often more important than explicit prejudicial beliefs? Why or why not?
- 8) Is Fricker right to say that Williams, on his own account, really needs a third epistemic virtue (“testimonial justice”)? Can you think of other virtues that Williams may have missed?
- 9) What is hermeneutical injustice? How does it differ from testimonial injustice? What solutions would you propose for it?
