previous modules, apply the five frames to a public or nonprofit organization
of your choosing. Complete descriptions of the organization for each of the
five frames in the handout (Links to an external site.) provided. Keep in mind
that the descriptions within your handout will become the basis for creating
recommendations in this week’s assignment for Recommendations for Improvement.
Overview
This session applies the five frames of analysis from
theBolman and Deal: pp. 303 – 336 book attached four frames typology with the
fifth frame of systems thinking added.
This session focuses on applying the knowledge you have
accumulated from each of the past sessions. The initial reading by Gareth
Morgan offers another explanation of the strengths and limits of looking at
organizations from one perspective or metaphor, in Morgan’s terms. Morgan’s
analysis aligns closely with Bolman and Deal’s initial chapter that makes the
case for multiple lenses or frames to understand and analyze the complex
realities of organizations—that one perspective alone cannot adequately capture
all the information needed for managers and leaders in organizations.

The focus of the Bolman and Deal (book attached) readings in
this session is on explaining the application of their four frames to managing
and leading an organization. The major conceptual shift in this session is
moving from descriptions of organizations to acting as a manager or leader on
the information developed from multiple frame analysis; in other words, moving
from understanding to action.
The assignments for this session start with application of
five frame descriptions to an actual nonprofit or public organization.Your
selection can be an organization that you currently or previously worked in, or
an organization that you find on the Electronic Hallway at the Evans School of
the University of Washington, or from newspaper articles, or academic
journals. The important factor in choosing an organization is to be sure you
have enough knowledge or written material to describe the organization from
each of the five frames. Most importantly these descriptions become the basis
for your developing recommendations to improve the organization.
