Quality / Motivation Assignment
1. Using a product, or Industry in your lifetime, and using the Quality Conundrum Model, outline how the product, company or industry has changed and moving features or services through the various levels. DO NOT USE the AUTO INDUSTRY, SMART PHONES, OR APPLE. We talked about these guys in class. Some suggestions (but you do not need to use these)
• Audio Visual (TV, Sound, media rooms, etc.)
• Online buying experience
• Home delivery industry
2. We talked about the Hidden Factory and costs that are below the visible surface. Using a job you have worked at, or school, or maybe a sports team you played on. Apply the discussion on the Hidden Factory to Identify areasbelow the surface where you have observed that these items were present. What were the issues, and what impact did these issues have on the end product?
3. Using Deming’s 14 points, consider a job that you have personally had (don’t need to know the company, just the experience); Identify 2 of these items on the list that , in your experience, the company did not do well, and outline the impact of not adhering to the principles. Also detail what you might recommend to the leadership to improve.
The intent here is to understand the real world application of these principles and how they pervade our everyday life. You can even apply these to a previous classroom experience if that fits (hopefully not THIS class !) (DO NOT USE #5; 8; or #14)
4. We discussed motivation; intrinsic vs Extrinsic. Identify someone you respect from a business or team perspective (Do not need to know the names) and try to identify (or perhaps ask them) what drives them (intrinsic motivators). Then, thinking through various extrinsic factors, what do you think would be successful Extrinsic motivators for these individuals. This will be a hard one at first, but this is a valuable exercise to learn for when you ultimately lead people.
