Mental Health Essay – Dissociative Identity disorder
CU Mental Health Essay
Must organize paper into the following sections below, label all parts I-VI. For instance, you should have a Part I: Summary, Part II Diagnostic Section, etc, clearly labeled in the body of the paper. Again, don’t lose points for this.
Write a summary of the book
Diagnose the main character (and other important characters if any) according to the DSM-5.
You can have more than one diagnosis.
The way to start this section is to first list any diagnoses you are giving.
For Example:
1) Dissociative Identity disorder
2) Major depressive disorder
Then explain in paragraph form in detail why you gave each diagnosis using DSM-5 criteria, and giving examples of the symptoms from the book. That means to review all of the symptoms and give me examples of how the character has that symptom and meets the criteria.
Also in this section be sure to discuss:
Any Psychosocial stressors the character is dealing with (they could impact/cause diagnosis)
Any serious medical conditions the person has (they could impact/cause diagnosis)
The potential impact of culture on the person’s illness
If there are no physical conditions, stressors or cultural impact, say that, so I know you assess it.
Write a 5-page research review of one of the disorders that the main character wasdiagnosed with from your list in Part II. You should not discuss your book in this section, it
should purely be research. Include very little information about symptoms in this section, as we have covered that in class.
It’s a good idea to start this section with some statistics about the disorder, how many people have it, number of new cases diagnosed each year, is it diagnoses in other areas of the world more or less than in the US, gender rates, age of onset, etc.
Then spend time discussing causes and treatments. .You must have at least two 2 scientific journal articles as sources in this section of the paper
Identify and give examples of at least two defense mechanisms that one of the
characters’ employs. So, define it, and then give the example. Use the ones we covered in class
(e.g., denial, rationalization, projection, etc).
Describe the main character’s behavior according to at least TWO different theoretical perspectives (e.g., biological, humanistic, psychodynamic, humanistic, cognitive, community, interaction). Student have trouble with this section sometimes because they just define the perspectives, instead of using the perspective to explain why they have the symptoms.
For example, if you chose the Biological one, discuss genetics, biochemistry, and structural abnormalities. Was the character treated? If yes, then describe how, and whether you disagree oragree with the treatment approach.
If not, do you think they should have been treated, and how?
