Week 4 Assignment – The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

Learning Objectives Covered:

LO 03.01 – Identify ethical situations and potential outcomes in patient care

LO 03.03 – Differentiate between ethical vs. legal situations in the healthcare setting

Career Relevancy

Working in healthcare you will encounter ethical dilemmas on a daily basis and you have to know how to handle the situation. With all of the changes that have happened in healthcare and the new advances in bioethics, laws and ethics we have to know what can be done from a legal perspective regardless of how we feel.

Background

Henrietta Lacks was a young lady that ended up with cervical cancer and the doctors took cells without the patient knowing. The doctors and hospitals made a lot of money off of HeLa cells while her family lived in poverty. You can see more in the video below.

For this assignment, you will also want to read starting at Excerpt: “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” by clicking here: https://www.npr.org/2010/02/02/123232331/henrietta-lacks-a-donors-immortal-legacy (Links to an external site.). (2,361 words)

Prompt

Write a paper to suggest a solution to how this situation should be handled both ethically and legally and defend it. Be sure to include the evidence from the excerpt that supports your decision. You should also include at least one external source to support your solution. The paper must be 500 words or more.

Remember, there are different reasons someone may make the decision they do. For example, how was Henrietta “immortal?” In 1951, doctors did not know much about cervical cancer; they did not know how to treat it or how to prevent it. Doctors also did research on patients who were poor and without their permission (no informed consent). Do you think this was right? Why or why not? How were the HeLa cancer cells different than any other cells in the world?
