How does one go about selecting a competency
compentency selection
- How does one go about selecting a competency to develop?
- You may select your particular competency based on your CORE Assessment results. Maybe there was an area where your performance was lower than desired. Maybe there was a strength or development area identified that surprised you, and you’d like to explore it further.
- (my strengths in my core assessment results were active listening, organizing and planning)
- You may choose a competency to develop based on your current role. You may have discovered that one competency, in particular, is critical for your job, and in order to have continued success, you will need to strengthen this particular area. You may have learned the value of this competency from personal experience or may have received feedback from your supervisor/co-workers on potential areas for development.
You may select a competency to develop based on your future career goals. Maybe you have a future professional goal in mind, and you know that in order to reach that goal, you will need to develop a particular competency.
Finally, you may choose a competency based on a personal need. Outside of your professional life, you may have some personal growth opportunities that could have a significant impact on the way that you navigate your personal life. We know that our personal and professional lives are connected, and we can rarely completely separate one from another. In this season of your life, you may be focusing on your own personal competencies, knowing that they will have an impact on all aspects of your life.
You already know that development requires both internal motivation and a growth mindset. Ultimately, you are the one who is making the decision based on external factors (i.e. current/future role) combined with your own personal desire for improvement.
