Wikipedia Project

Wikipedia has become a pervasive and definitive source of information for our culture. Therefore, it is important for us to really analyze and think about this powerful source of information, as it cuts to the essence of culture and communication – that is, the power of mass communication and how it can shape ideas, beliefs, and values. This activity aligns with module outcome 2.

Write at least a 2-page, double-spaced letter to the Wikipedia citizen editors (that is, the community of users responsible for this page. Please note, you are writing to hypothetical editors, not the real ones).

Choose a Wikipedia page on a topic that you know a lot about or that feel you are an expert in. It can be something more pop cultural and trivial, or it can be something that relates to your profession. The topic does not matter, just be sure that you know a lot about it.

Be sure you answer these required questions and points as you write to the editor:

Offer an overall analysis and assessment of the information on the page.

Do you feel that the material is accurate? Does it cover the topic well enough?

Is there information that you feel is missing or that hasn’t been covered enough?

Do feel that this is a good place to go for information on this topic? Are the references strong?

Look at the history of the page and the revisions to see how it evolved.

As you conclude your letter, write a paragraph or two addressing the following:

In general, explain how you feel about Wikipedia being one of the main ways that our culture informs itself?

Explain whether you find it problematic that this is often the first place that society goes for information – or do you think that this is all a bunch of hand-wringing over nothing? Please explain and support your answer.

Be sure to organize your ideas clearly in the letter and provide detailed evidence and illustrations to support your claims. Use screenshot images where necessary to support. Feel free to use a less formal and academic voice, since it is a letter.

Compose your work in a .doc or .docx file type using a word processor (such as Microsoft Word, etc.) and save it frequently to your computer. For those assignments that are not written essays and require uploading images or PowerPoint slides, please follow uploading guidelines provided by your instructor.

Check your work and correct any spelling or grammatical errors. When you are ready to submit your work, click “Upload Submission.” Enter the submission title and then click on “Select a file to upload.” Browse your computer, and select your file. Click “Open” and verify the correct file name has appeared next to Submission File. Click on “Continue.” Confirm submission is correct and then click on “Accept Submission & Save.”
