Imagine that you are a mental health counselor. Based on the American Psychological Association’s Code of Conduct, what ethical guidelines do you think need to be considered when diagnosing and treating a client? What ethical guidelines need to be considered when determining whether a client would be considered competent to stand trial or committed to an institution?
Mental health workers often have to balance the respect of confidentiality and privacy for clients, with a duty to warn that it is a legal responsibility. Describe the Tarasoff Case discussed in your book, what it requires, and criticisms of its use. Does this mean that a mental health worker has to report all instances of past crimes? Use the section entitled “controversy” on page 555 to help you answer this last question.
