Your writing assignment is this week is to “translate” your course project essay into a business-style slide deck and narrate it. This discussion introduces you to business-style slide decks (BSSDs).

BSSDs are more versatile than typical slide shows because they can be read as a “stand alone” document or they can accompany a presentation or narration.

The slide decks I post for you each week are examples of BSSDs.  You can always read them and get the gist of my ideas because I use full sentence bullet points, rather than the typical minimal phrases.  If I narrate the slides as well or use them in the live class stream recording, you can both see and hear them.  For more information about BSSDs, see the slide decks hyperlinked below.

POST 1

For your BY THURSDAY post, read the contextual material and follow the directions below.  Post by Thursday for 2 post-by-Thursday points and 6 points for quality and timing.

If you are not planning to attend the Live Lesson for this week, complete the Live Lesson discussion. This task will encourage you to study more carefully how to “translate” your essay into a business-style slide deck.

Download Week 7 DeVry Slide Deck Template Preview the documentand save it as Your Last Name Course Project Slide Deck.

Outline the content of your slide deck by drafting the titles of each slide. Use full sentences for your titles. Your reader should be able to understand the gist of your commentary from reading the titles alone.

Flesh out each slide with details from your essay. Use bullets and indented bullets to indicate key ideas and supporting details. Use author tags, citations, quotes, just as you did in your essay.

Paste your visual element and label it. Call it out where appropriate.

Paste a corrected reference list. Use bullets to separate the various entries.

Focus on the content of the slide; you do not need your narration to submit your slide deck for feedback.

When you are ready, click on the Reply button, label your post as a BY THURSDAY post and attach your slide deck.  Sign your post when you are finished. Complete your slide deck as early in the week as you can, so you can get feedback on it before you narrate it.

This week, one of your assignments is to “translate” your commentary essay into a business-style slide deck.  These kinds of slide decks are often used in a business setting because they are versatile—that is, they can be read and understood, or they can complement a presentation or narration.

You may have already seen these kinds of slide decks. Students in the past have said that training materials at their workplaces use this format.

In general, does Jake’s/Joe’s slide deck follow the order of his problem-solution essay?

To what extent does Jake’s/Joe’s slide deck “stand alone,” that is, can you still understand the slides even though the narration has been deleted (to help preserve anonymity)? Why?

Does Jake/Joe follow the same conventions about acknowledging source material on his slides as he does in his course project essay?

To what extent does Jake/Joe use bullet points, tables and white space to avoid a “wall of words” on his slides?

Does Jake/Joe choose a minimalist design and leave a white background for easy reading?
