Instructions

Using the Narrative Essay Planning Template that you completed for last week’s assignment, you are now ready to compose the full and final narrative essay.

This essay, your Week 2 assignment, should consist of nothing but your story, your “showing” of the moment in time to your reader. While you addressed concepts like audience and purpose last week in your planning document, you will not write about those concepts in your essay. Your Week 2 assignment, the full final draft of your Narrative Essay, should do nothing but tell your story and bring your reader into the scene with you, from start to finish.

Be sure to read this week’s lesson and Chapter 6 in your text for information about adding rich description to narration for maximum success, keeping these key components in mind:

Narratives take a specific angle that tells the story of a single, powerful, meaningful moment in time, a person, place, or event with which you had first-hand experience.

Narratives are not full life stories; instead, they share a fresh perspective on a one significant day/moment in time for you.

The narrative should focus on something that happened to you in a moment in time, anywhere from an extremely powerful few minutes to a deeply rich and meaningful hour. The writing should be powerful enough to show that it has shaped you, even changed you significantly.

Narratives require writers to take a close look at the surroundings and at the people present and to use very rich detail and description to bring the subject to life.

The audience of the narrative essay is general – humans. Therefore, you must bring your reader into the scene with you through narration and description while also successfully communicating an angle and situation.

Reviewing all of the sample essays in Chapters 5 and 6 will give you a feel for all of these conventions.

Important: Outside research is not allowed for this essay.
