Requirements
For Week 1,

creating a recorded presentation that includes an introduction and your current
state’s scope of practice as an NP. This presentation will be uploaded into the
course via Kaltura (See “How to use Kaltura” below)
Preparing
the Assignment
Prepare a
PowerPoint presentation offline that addresses the following content:
Your
interests, cooking, music, animals, etc.
Your
current RN position
Length of
time as an RN
Area of the
country you reside
Your
state’s scope of practice for NPs including the level of independence of
practice, prescribing authority, any limitations of practice, the process for
obtaining licensure in your state, certification and education requirements for
licensure.
Next, record
your PowerPoint presentation using Kaltura and upload it here. If you have technical issues, please contact
your faculty or Tech Support.
for more information on how to use Kaltura.
The
presentation should include a PowerPoint presentation which will be recorded
via Kaltura.
Students
should create the PowerPoint presentation offline and then open it for use
during the Kaltura recording.
Students
must practice/recording the presentation more than once to allow for practice
and mastery of the content and presentation style. The final presentation of
the Kaltura recording should be submitted only. Do not use PowerPoint to record
the presentation.
Students
should review their presentation for clarity in audio and sound as well as
clarity in the information presented before the final submission.
Students
should be professionally dressed in business casual attire for the presentation
with/without lab coat. Scrubs, sweats, denim, yoga pants, and athletic wear are
not considered business casual. Student’s face must be visible via the webcam
during the presentation.
The
presentation should contain appropriate scholarlyevidence to support the
information presented per APA format. Use in-text references and have a
reference list at the end of the presentation.
PowerPoint
slides should be used as cues to topics and key concepts without lengthy
sentences and paragraphs- reading information from slides is not professional
and therefore not acceptable.
A
professional presentation includes an introduction both of yourself and of the
topic, the touch points of information you’re going to discuss as well as a
conclusion.
Students
may use any type and size font that works for their presentation. Slides should
include bullet points you intend to cover, 4-5 bullet points per slide. The
bullet points should be expanded upon with oral information. Direct quotes and
paragraphs are discouraged. Speaker notes are not included in the presentation
but are used by the presenter as a side-reference.
The
student’s oral presentation should demonstrate clear understanding of all
concepts along with specific examples to represent concepts.
NR510 Leadership and Role of the Advanced Practice Nurse
Week 2 Discussion
Advanced Practice
Nursing
In week
one, you discussed your scope of practice in your current state as a nurse
practitioner. Now, explore the four APN roles in your state (CNP, CNS, CRNA
& CNM).
Discuss
work environment, level of accountability, patient population, salary, and
scope of practice for each of the APN roles. Provide your personal Pro and Con
list for each role and provide appropriate citations.
Describe
your rationale for choosing the CNP advanced practice role versus any of the
other three. What are your plans for clinical practice after graduation? Has
your idea of NP practice changed after researching this for your state?

Week 3 Discussion
Organizational
Behavior and Business Influences and Advanced Practice Nursing Case Study
You are a
family nurse practitioner (FNP) employed as a contract (1099 independent
contractor) in a busy primary care practice for 2 years. The providers in the
group include one physician, who is also the owner of the practice, and two
other nurse practitioners, who are staff employees (W2 employees). The owner of
the practice recently made comments about the need to produce more revenue. You
relate with his concerns and feel that you have several strategies that could be
helpful. Your contract is up for renewal in 3 months. You are highly satisfied
with your job and want to stay with the group. You see 20 patients per day on
average and take call every third weekend.
Discussion
Question:
What
negotiation strategies should you use to propose a contract renewal? How does
your role as a 1099 contractor benefit the practice over the W2 employees? What
evidence will you present to the practice to reinforce your value in the
practice both in terms of revenue and patient satisfaction? Consider any
additional services you may be willing to provide under your contract. Use
logical reasoning, and provide evidence-based rationales for your decisions.
Keep in
mind that your negotiation terms and conditions must be within the legal scope
of practice for an ANP.

Week 4 Discussion
Organizational
Change and Ethical-Legal Influences in Advanced Practice Nursing Case Study
You are a
family nurse practitioner employed in a busy primary care office. The providers
in the group include one physician and three nurse practitioners. The back
office staff includes eight medical assistants who assist with patient care as
well as filing, answering calls from patients, processing laboratory results
and taking prescription renewal requests from patients and pharmacies.
Stephanie, a medical assistant, has worked in the practice for 10 years and is
very proficient at her job. She knows almost every patient in the practice, and
has an excellent rapport with all of the providers.
Mrs. Smith
was seen today in the office for an annual physical. Her last appointment was a
year ago for the same reason. During this visit, Mrs. Smith brought an empty
bottle of amoxicillin with her and asked if she could have a refill. You noted
the patient’s name on the label, and the date on the bottle was 1 week ago. You
also noted your name printed on the label as the prescriber. The patient
admitted that she called last week concerned about her cough and spoke to Stephanie.
You do not recall having discussed this patient with Stephanie nor do the other
providers in the practice.
Discussion
Question:
What are
the potential ethical and legal implications for each of the following practice
members?:
Medical
assistant
Nurse
Practitioner
Medical
Director
Practice
What
strategies would you implement to prevent further episodes of potentially
illegal behavior?
What
leadership qualities would you apply to effect a positive change in the
practice? Be thinking about the culture
of the practice.

Week 5 Discussion
Conflict at
the Office Discussion
You are a
family nurse practitioner working in an outpatient primary care office of a
large hospital system. The practice has been operating for over 15 years, and
many of the administrative and clinical staff were hired when the practice
opened. You have been in the practice for less than 3 months. In that short
amount of time, you have witnessed several of the clinical staff engaging in
heated arguments with each other, sometimes in patient areas. You overhear an
argument occurring today between two staff. You pick up a patient’s chart and
notice a very low blood pressure that the medical assistant failed to notify
you about. When you confront the MA, she states that she was going to report
the vital signs to you when she became engaged in the heated argument you overheard
and forgot to notify you.
Unfortunately,
this pattern of behavior is not unusual in this practice. Working with staff
who cannot cooperate effectively can negatively influence your ability to spend
time with patients, can impede the flow of patients through the office, and
could impact patient safety.
