MDC Dehydration Case Study

Scenario:

Denise is a nurse who works in a hospital. One of her patients is Stanley a 65-year old man who passed out in his kitchen this morning, fell and cut his head open. When his daughter brought him to the Emergency Room, she told them that he had been acting lethargic and confused before he fell. To be on the safe side, after cleaning and stitching Stanley’s wound, his doctor decided to keep him in the hospital for observation overnight. When Denise came in to check on Stanley, he quietly asked if she could help him with his urinal, as he did not feel strong enough to get to the bathroom on his own. He apologized for his raspy voice, telling her that his mouth was a bit dry. Denise assisted him and then went to empty his urinal. As she did she noticed that the urine was nearly orange in color.

1) If you sent the urine to the lab, what kinds of values would you expect to see? (Urinalysis:  eg. Leucocyte esterase, nitrite, WBC, RBC, Specific gravity, protein, pH, ketones, glucose, bilirubin-  and tell whether you would expect it to be high, low, or none and then  why if you believe that it would not be normal?)

2) What condition does Stanley likely have and how can you tell?

3) Describe three things that Stanley can do to help alleviate his condition and explain the reasoning for each.
