Week 4 Assignment

Annotated Bibliography

Overview

It is important to become familiar with the literature in your specialization area, so you understand what is known and how we know it. Of course, in order to become familiar with the literature, you need to be able to find resources and evaluate them—hence the need for library skills. Do you know which journals are most highly regarded in your specialization? Do you know how to use keywords effectively when searching or how to read an article and find the most important information to summarize? These are all skills you need, not just for the courses you will take here at Capella, but you will also need them when you enter your field and throughout your career.

Note: We encourage you to keep an annotated bibliography for each course you take at Capella. Keeping a record of the articles you have found can help you build a reference list that you can continue to refer to throughout your program, for your capstone, and in your career.

Preparation

Complete the following if you have not already:

Determine a research question from your specialization.

Determine keywords and conduct a search of the most appropriate Capella University Library databases to find relevant, scholarly articles.

Choose 3–4 peer-reviewed, scholarly articles related to your research question.

Review the Annotated Bibliography Worksheet [DOCX], which you will use to write your assignment, as well as the Assignment 4 Exemplar [DOC], which offers an example of an annotated bibliography.

Instructions

For your assignment, summarize the topic investigation you have done, including the following:

Research Question Based on Professional Interest.

Explain how your research question relates to your specialization and professional interests.

Keywords.

List the keywords you used for the searches you conducted in the scholarly databases, and explain your reasoning behind the choices you made. Describe the results you achieved.

Evaluation of Sources.

List and explain the criteria you used to evaluate the reliability, validity, and credibility of each articles you selected, including:

The article was published in the last 5–7 years.

The article included a literature review, methodology, and results.

The article was peer-reviewed.

Sources.

Summarize at least three, but no more than four, scholarly sources that address your topic and research question within a psychology specialization in an annotated bibliography that includes:

A summary of each article. Each summary should be approximately one paragraph consisting of 3–5 sentences. In your summary, focus on providing high-level information rather than the details. Include information from the conclusion of the article and how it is relevant to your research topic.

The APA citation for each article. For example: Author, A. A., Author, B. B., & Author, C. C. (Year). Title of article. Title of Periodical, volume number(issue number), pages. If available, include doi information.

Additional Requirements

Written communication: Should be free of errors that detract from the overall message.

APA formatting: References and citations should be formatted according to current APA style and format.

Resources: 3–4 scholarly resources.

Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12-point.

Worksheet: Use the Annotated Bibliography Worksheet for your assignment.

Week 6 Assignment

LITERATURE REVIEW

Overview

For this assignment, you will write a literature review. Now that you have found resources related to your research question and summarized them in your annotated bibliography, the next step is to look further into how they relate to each other and shed light on your research question. Not only will you be writing literature reviews in some of your future courses at Capella, but these skills will also help you in your future career in whatever specialization you pursue. For example, as an addictions counselor, you might need to develop a treatment plan that is suited to a particular situation. You will need to turn to the literature to understand what is known and what is not about that situation. Using critical thinking skills, you can find themes and determine what course of action your treatment plan should take. Behavior analysts also rely on the literature to determine evidence-based practices when assessing, setting goals, and developing support plans for clients and students.

Preparation

Complete the following if you have not already:

Analyze the sources you found for your annotated bibliography and identify key themes.

Review the Literature Review Template [DOC] you will use to write your paper and the Assignment 6 Exemplar [DOC], which gives an example of a literature review.

Instructions

Complete the following in your assignment template:

Introduction

State your research question, and explain how it relates to your specialization and professional interests. Use the research question you developed for your annotated bibliography. Be sure to integrate any feedback you received from your instructor.

Synthesis of Literature Into a Cohesive Review

In the preparation study in Week 5, you identified at least three key themes, or focuses of inquiry, that are relevant to your research question and present in each article. These themes may be based on:

Related aspects of research questions.

Related or differing conclusions.

Other factors or ideas the studies have in common.

Other points of contrast between the studies.

Use concise formulations of these themes as headings for the next sections of the paper. In these sections, compare and contrast your resources’ positions relative to each theme, and then synthesize your own position relative to the theme. Support your conclusions by citing your references.

Granello’s 2001 article, “Promoting Cognitive Complexity in Graduate Written Work: Using Bloom’s Taxonomy as a Pedagogical Tool to Improve Literature Reviews,” provides a framework and strategies to help you work through this part of your assignment.

Conclusion

Restate the conclusions you came to regarding the themes you explored with your research. Support your conclusions by citing your references. However, if you find that more research would be needed to decide a question, briefly outline ideas of how you could undertake that research.

Additional Requirements

Written communication: Should be free of errors that detract from the overall message.

APA formatting: References and citations should be formatted according to current APA style and format. Include a title page, abstract, and reference list.

Resources: Minimum of three scholarly resources. All references need to be cited in-text, according to current APA standards. Remember that citations are to support your thoughts, not take the place of them!

Length: 4–5 double-spaced pages, not including the title page or reference page.

Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12-point.

Template: Use the Literature Review Template to format your assignment.

Submission

To maximize your scoring potential, be sure that you fully address all assignment requirements and meet the criteria in the scoring guide that will be used to assess your assignment. It is helpful to self-score your paper using the scoring guide before submitting, to be sure that you are meeting criteria for the grade you want to earn.

Week 9 Assignment

YOUR CAREER IN PSYCHOLOGY

Overview

This final assignment provides you an opportunity to transform your vision into reality by translating your exploration and brainstorming activities into a plan to actualize your vision and achieve your goals. By now, you are a practitioner-scholar with a lot of knowledge and insight about your interests in psychology and your career trajectory. To begin this assignment, take some time to reflect on all you have learned about the field and ways you can contribute to psychology, especially within your specialization.

Preparation

Throughout this course, you had opportunities to clarify your passions and interests in psychology practice and scholarship, to create SMART goals to help you achieve your vision, and to explore the competencies and requirements for pursuing a career in your specialized field of psychology.

Instructions

Complete the following in the Your Career in Psychology Template:

Application and Research Vision

Describe your vision for your career as a practitioner-scholar, and include three specific goals using the SMART goal model.

Discuss how you would apply the findings from your literature review to your future professional practice in psychology.

What aspects of your research affected your vision or goals?

Given this, what topics do you think you would be interested in researching in the future?

Analyze how your work this quarter will help you accomplish the functions, responsibilities, and ethics required of a professional in your specialization. You should cite information from your literature review and from your interview with a professional from your chosen career path. Remember to critically evaluate all information you use.

Describe how your vision was affected by the information in your readings from your Career Paths in Psychology text and in your exploration of the Career Center and other resources.

Professional Competencies and Requirements

Understanding the competencies and responsibilities involved in your future career in psychology is essential for growing as a practitioner-scholar in your field. It is also necessary to understand any requirements needed for your specialized practice and scholarship.

For this step in the assignment, describe the competencies, responsibilities, ethical considerations, and other requirements needed for achieving your vision and goals as a professional in psychology. These include:

Capella program and specialization requirements.

Credentialing, certification, licensure, and accreditation practices and standards.

Analyze the role of the practitioner-scholar model in guiding professional development.

Skills, abilities, and attitudes critical to success in the field of psychology, such as those related to critical thinking, decision making, problem solving, evidence-based practices, ethical integrity, cultural competence, and conflict resolution.

Make note of skills, abilities, and attitudes related to the practitioner-scholar model and the experience you had in researching scholarly sources in your literature review.

Ethical codes, principles, laws, and policies applicable to your chosen career path.

Action Plan

With all this knowledge of your vision and goals, and the competencies and requirements for the field in hand, you are ready to plot your course to making these aspirations a reality. The final step in this assignment is to create an action plan to achieve your goals. This means translating the requirements for your profession and the development areas you identified into specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timed (SMART) steps to achieve your vision.

Include these elements in your action plan:

Plan for completing your Capella program.

Possible opportunities for additional training or volunteer work to address gaps in your knowledge or skills.

Possible opportunities in your current position to develop additional skills.

Capella community groups and professional organizations that you could join for networking with others and completing additional informational interviews.

How you will stay current with the research, literature, and ethics in the field.

How you can apply what you have learned in this course about researching psychological literature and evaluating it in terms of reliability, credibility, ethics, and value.

How you will apply critical thinking and effective decision making in your specialization.

How you will use Capella’s support resources to develop the skills required to improve your writing and other competencies essential to the profession and to your role as a graduate learner.

Review the SMART Goals presentation, Career Center resources, and search the Capella University Library for additional reflective exercises and inspiring ideas about transforming your vision into an action plan.

Additional Requirements

Written communication: Should be free of errors that detract from the overall message.

Writing style: APA expectations for scholarly writing include the use of third-person narrative, unless it is awkward to do so. However, because you are talking about yourself in this paper, you may write in the first person.

APA formatting: References and citations should be formatted according to current APA style and format. Include a title page, abstract, and references list.

Resources: Minimum of five resources with at least three of them from course readings. Your references may include both scholarly literature and practitioner sources. Length: 6–7 double-spaced pages, not including the title page or references page.

Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12-point.
