•             Examine the range of community resources and services accessible to individuals and families including those through the Federal, State, and local Department of Children and Family Services.

Directions

This week you will write a memo in which you recommend pertinent community resources and services for client(s) presented in a case study.

To begin, read the case studies provided in Appendix A of this document.  You will select one of these case studies to serve as the basis for your memo.  As you read the case studies, imagine you are working as an assistant at a local behavioral health organization that provides low-cost counseling services to individuals and families.  Your supervisor has asked you to write a memo in which you summarize your recommendations for the clients described in your chosen case study.Your supervisor wants you to focus your recommendations specifically on the resources/services available in your community and through the federal, state, and local departments of Children and Family Services.  Your supervisor has asked that your finished memo be emailed to them and to other members of the treatment team working with the individual or family in crisis.

After selecting a case study, examine the resources available in your community and through the various applicable departments of Children and Family Services.  As you browse these websites, keep in mind that you will want to select resources appropriate and relevant to your chosen case study.

•             You can use the following weblink to access the website for the federal Administration for Children & Families: Administration for Children & Families

o             Towards the top of the site is a link to “find help,” which is a good starting point in locating resources for the client(s) in your case study.

•             To find your state and local departments of Children and Family services, you can conduct a Google search for the term Department of Children and Family Services followed by your state, city, or county name.

o             For example, if you live in Buffalo, NY, you might conduct Google searches for “Department of Children and Family Services New York State” and “Department of Children and Family Services Buffalo.”

•             Finally, to see what other resources might be available within your community, you can conduct a Google search for the term community resources followed by the name of your city and state.

o             For example, if you live in Cleveland, OH, you might conduct a Google search for “community resources Cleveland Ohio.”

Find and select a total of at least three applicable resources (across the local, state and federal level).  These will be the focus of the body of your memo.

You may have written a memo in a previous course (such as INFT124).  You can use this existing knowledge or any of the examples/templates available in Word to help you in constructing your memo.  A template is also provided in Appendix B at the end of this document.  If you choose to use this template, you should replace the prompts surrounded by [brackets] with the text required by the prompts.  For instance, you will complete the from line with your own name and remove the text that says “[Your name].”  No matter which template or example you choose to use, your memo should be formatted to include to, from, CC, date, and subject lines and a body.

The body of your memo should be used to address the following:

•             In your own words, summarize the concerns that brought the client in to the behavioral health office.

•             Identify what the client was hoping to learn or gain by coming in to the behavioral health office.

•             List at least three specific resources you would recommend for the client.

o             Whenever possible, provide the name and weblink for the selected resource.

o             Explain how you think each resource will benefit the client and help them to address the concerns that caused them to come to the behavioral health office.

•             Conclude your memo by using a few sentences to summarize the client’s primary concerns and your recommendations.
