Part 3: Who Decides What Goes in My Milk?

James was confused. It seemed some recombinant proteins were good and some were bad. If that were the case, who made the decision on what goes into your food? James went back online and did a little research into recombinant proteins and genetically modified foods. He was curious to find the answers and prove to his big brother that he wasn’t as ignorant and naive as he believed.

6. Why was James able to bring milk back into Canada containing rBGH if it is illegal to use this recombinant protein in Canada?

Part 4: Smart Food?

James had no idea how much research and discussion went into decisions to ban things such as rBGH. He realized as a consumer, he simply purchased things he liked or wanted with little regard for its origins. He walked back down to the living room and found Brad still lying on the couch. As James approached, Brad looked at him and smugly asked, “Finish your homework yet, Einstein?” James sat down beside him and started to explain all that he had discovered about recombinant DNA technology, its use, and its regulation. As he was explaining about the use of synthetic insulin, Brad abruptly cut him off, saying “DUH. Even little kids know that! Tell me something I don’t know.”

James was getting frustrated with his older brother and began to walk out of the room. Out of the corner of his eye, James noticed the bag of popcorn in Brad’s hands. “Well, if you’re so smart about this stuff, why are you eating popcorn that is likely made from genetically modified corn?” asked James.

For the first time all day, Brad was speechless. What Do You Think? Would you be comfortable consuming genetically modified food or are you adamantly opposed to their inclusion in the food supply. Pick a viewpoint and explain your position in an opinion essay.
