ANT348 Native American Anthropology

Week 1 Collaboration

Collaboration 1. Anthropologists often collaborate with their colleagues, during research studies, at conferences, etc. This collaboration can lead to substantial anthropological advances and serves as an excellent professional development tool. Throughout this course, you will collaborate with a small group of your classmates (assigned by your Instructor in the Announcements), as you would with colleagues in the field by sharing ideas, resources, interesting connections to the textbook, and general revelations.

You are expected to participate by posting in the collaborative forum space for your small group at least three times during the learning week, though you are encouraged to maximize this opportunity for collaboration and participate more often. Your grade for this assignment will be based upon participation, i.e., whether or not you posted in your group’s forum space at least three times (initial posts or replies to classmates). Note: You are not required to participate in all of the small group forum spaces, only the one that you were assigned to.

To begin the collaboration, be sure you know your assigned small group. If not, check the Announcements this week where your instructor has posted the group assignments. Then select your assigned group from the list of groups in this forum (above). Do not post in the forum space below these instructions. If you have any questions, please reach out to your instructor.

This week, collaborate on the following topics:

Share the tribe you have selected to research for this course and why you selected it. What resources have

you found so far to use in your research?

Look ahead at the Final Project (Online Conference Presentation) and decide on whether you will create a

presentation with Present.Me or PowerPoint. What are the benefits to either one? Why is it valuable to practice creating presentations? Which option have you decided to pursue to present your research in this course? Why?

During this course, you are encouraged to begin the process of creating a professional portfolio using a free online program (Wix) and to share your portfolio in the collaboration forums to gain feedback and ideas from your classmates. Professional portfolios showcase the skills you gained throughout your degree program and can be shared with potential employers and/or graduate schools. For this week, try exploring Wix for use in compiling a professional portfolio and share your thoughts and identify any specific templates that you think will be useful to you in building a portfolio.

o Examples of portfolios made on Wix.com: Example 1, Example 2, Example 3

o Wix.comQuickStartGuide

o If you experience any technical difficulties, please visit the Wix Support Center. The technical

support offered through your Student Portal will not be able to assist you with the Wix website. If for any reason you are unable to utilize the Wix platform to create your portfolio but are

interested in creating a portfolio through other means, please contact your instructor.

o If you already have a professional portfolio or website, feel free to share that instead!

o Note that this will not be graded by your Instructor but that this is an opportunity to begin theprocess of creating a showcase that will be meaningful to you in your career or pursuit of graduate school.

Collaboration Tips and Ideas for Week One:

Share your thoughts on your classmates’ selected tribes and how they compare and contrast from yourown selection. You might share any experiences you have with the tribes or draw information from thetextbook about how the various tribes compare.

Give each other advice or feedback on the value of creating presentations and your classmates’ selected tool for the presentation in this course.

Discuss and give feedback on what your classmates’ have to say about the portfolio site and the value of creating a professional portfolio.

This forum is intended to be rigorous, positive, encouraging, and alive with conversation. Please ensure your interactions promote a positive community of learning.
