Ethical and Professional Issues in Psychological Assessment
Prior to beginning work on this assignment, read the required textbook chapters and articles for this week and view the video on Functional Behavioral Assessment (Links to an external site.) by Dr. Tim Lewis. For this discussion, you will take on the role of the private psychologist being asked to conduct a full psychological evaluation of a client. Carefully review the ABS 300 Week One Assessment Scenario Download ABS 300 Week One Assessment Scenario. In your initial post, first, clearly state whether or not you agree to conduct a new full psychological evaluation of the client. Write a rationale for either agreeing or disagreeing with the request toconduct a new psychological evaluation of the client based on the information available. Explain which theoretical assumptions about psychological testing and assessment as discussed in the textbook support your decision. Apply the American Psychological Ethical Standards from the assigned reading to discuss the ethical responsibilities a psychologist must consider if choosing to re-test the client. Provide a pro/con analysis of both potential decisions regarding whether or not to re–test the client. In your pro/con analysis, present the potential ethical issues which might arise from each decision–the decision to re-test and the decision to not re-test–the client in the given scenario. Assume you have the opportunity to conduct a behavioral assessment interview before making your decision about whether or not to conduct a full psychological assessment. Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read Chapters 5 and 6 in the textbook and the required articles for this week. Take the role of a psychological examiner administering a standardized test of intelligence to Johnny, an 8-year-old boy, as a part of a research project. In your initial post, begin by describing your current understanding of the concept of intelligence. Based on your description of intelligence, evaluate Johnny’s response in comparison to the responses identified as correct in the standardization manual. First, clearly state your decision whether or not to score Johnny’s answer as correct or incorrect. Explain your rationale. Analyze the “four seasons of the year” test item in terms of at least two of the following psychological measurement concepts: reliability, predictive validity, content validity, and cultural fairness. Evaluate the standards in the APA’s Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct that address testing bias and the strategies for multicultural assessments discussed in the article by Horin, Hernandez & Donoso (2012) in light of the current scenario. Applications of Intelligence Assessment
Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read Chapters 9 and 10 in the textbook, the required articles, and the required videos for this week. The WAIS-IV is a commonly used standardized intelligence test for adolescents and adults. Assume you have been asked to evaluate an inpatient and have very limited time so that you can administer only 3 subtests from the WAIS-IV. The referral question is to determine the likelihood that the subject will be able to return to work. In your discussion post, you must describe the subtests you selected and thoroughly explain the rationale for your choice. In your rationale be sure to describe the properties and applications of the standardized intelligence test subtests selected as they apply to your assigned client. Identify at least one methodological consideration concerning the reliability and validity of administering the chosen subtests. Explain what modifications you would make (if any) to your choice of subtests if you found out your client had less than a high school education or was not a native English speaker. Give examples of arguments for and against the use of standardized tests to make predictions about future performance and apply these arguments to your specific assigned client. In addition to the required reading, research a minimum of one peer-reviewed article from the Ashford University Library to support your choice of subtests. There are multiple instruments to measure personality (both objective and projective) that are reviewed in the textbook. For this discussion, assume the role of a human resources manager tasked with hiring several employees for a newly formed life insurance sales company. Your job is to interview and hire an accountant and a district manager who will be responsible for supervising 25 employees. Unfortunately, the company has limited financial resources, so you are only able to use one measure of personality as part of your interview process. In your discussion post, describe the personality measure you selected and thoroughly explain the rationale for your choice. Identify relevant reliability and validity information about the personality measure you selected and specify how the reliability and validity information justifies using the instrument for hiring for each of the above positions. In addition to the required reading, research a minimum of one peer-reviewed article from the Ashford University Library to support your choice of subtests.
Note: It is common for there to be a delay between the time a test publisher updates a test and the time the textbook and other authors can update their information about the new version of the test. Be sure to do online research to make sure you are recommending the most current version of the test. For this discussion, you will take on the role of a mental health professional in private practice who is considering providing remote psychological testing as a part of their telehealth assessment services. You are researching the types of services you could provide in order to present your ideas to one of the world’s leading healthcare investors introduced in this week’s assigned video. In your initial post, begin with a paragraph briefly summarizing the types of mental health assessments which can be provided remotely. Do not discuss delivery methods such as telephone, video conferencing, interactive websites, email, or online chat. Analyze your peer-reviewed journal research article(s) and explain the types of testing and assessments that are best suited for remote/telehealth delivery. For this discussion, you will take on the role of graduate student working in a mental health clinic as a part of a practicum assignment. You have been assigned to work with Ms. Thompson. You are provided a copy of Ms. Thompson’s clinical neuropsychological report and your responsibility is to assist Ms. Thompson in following through with the psychologist’s recommendations. You will focus on recommendations #3-5 in the clinical neuropsychological report in order to address impairments in attention and concentration that are adversely impacting her learning and social functioning. When you meet with Ms. Thompson, you will be required to confirm the reason for referral and develop a personalized intervention plan. To determine your comprehension of the information in the assessment report, your practicum supervisor asks you to summarize the psychological assessment findings. To begin your initial post, write a one-paragraph summary of the most significant psychological test results from the clinical neuropsychological report. Be sure to summarize actual test results, not the background history information about the client. Your summary must be 200- 250 words.
In addition, as a part of your training experience, your practicum supervisor challenges you to carefully review the tests used to evaluate Ms. Thompson. For the second part of your discussion post, present the list of alternative tests that you compiled and include relevant information from the course text or a peer-reviewed journal article to support your choices.
