Week 1 Discussion

Clinical and Counseling Cases

 Prepare.png      Prepare: Prior to completing this discussion, be certain that you have completed the required readings in Chapters 1 and 2 of your required text, the Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct (Links to an external site.) on the APA website, the article by Fishman and Messer (2013) and that you have reviewed the Applied Psychology learning object for this week and the Week 1 Instructor Guidance.         

Reflect.png         Reflect: In this discussion, you will examine the uses of applied behavioral science through clinical and counseling cases. This discussion has three options from which you will choose one to complete. After selecting one of the options, indicate which one you chose in your response.

Option A:

Karen confides in you that she feels “down” all the time. She feels hopeless, finds no enjoyment in life (sleep, food, sex, friends, etc.), and is having thoughts of suicide. Karen goes to see her family doctor who diagnoses her with major depressive disorder. Her doctor prescribes an antidepressant and recommends Karen seek professional mental health services. Based on your study this week, address each of the following:

Identify how a clinical psychologist, counseling psychologist, and counselor might approach working with Karen.

Defend your position with support from the reading, noting definitions and key features.

Indicate at least one major approach to psychotherapy which would be appropriate for Karen based on the literature.

Identify at least one type of assessment procedure or psychological test that would be useful to administer to Karen to aid in diagnosis and treatment planning.

Examine how you, as a mental health professional, would respond to Karen and what your ethical duties are.

Option B:

Chris can often be found around the house laughing loudly at inappropriate jokes he is telling. When he is not laughing, he is singing or whistling and making non-stop noise, as he feels like he has boundless energy. When his daughter gets home, he calls her names and accuses her of plotting to harm him. The next day, Chris calls the police to report that his daughter is a spy sent from another planet to obtain military intelligence that will be used to take over the United States government.

Based on your study this week, address each of the following:

Identify how a clinical psychologist, counseling psychologist, and counselor might approach working with Chris.

Defend your position with support from the reading, noting definitions and key features.

Indicate at least one major approach to psychotherapy which would be appropriate for Chris based on the literature.

Identify at least one type of assessment procedure or psychological test that would be useful to administer to Chris to aid in diagnosis and treatment planning.

Examine how you, as a mental health professional, would respond to Chris and what your ethical duties are.

Option C:

Maria and David are having difficulty adjusting to being new parents. Although they both adore their two-month-old son and are grateful to have him, they both have experienced a decrease in marital satisfaction since Davito was born. Maria and David report fatigue, increased irritability, disrupted sleeping and eating patterns, and decreased interest in sex. They deny thoughts of divorce. They attended a new parent fellowship meeting at their church and learned several other couples were having similar concerns. One couple discussed how counseling helped them with adjusting to being new parents.

Based on your study this week, address each of the following:

Identify how a clinical psychologist, counseling psychologist, and counselor might approach working with Maria and David.

Defend your position with support from the reading, noting definitions and key features.

Indicate at least one major approach to psychotherapy which would be appropriate for Maria and David based on the literature.

Identify at least one type of assessment procedure or psychological test that would be useful to administer to Maria and David to aid in diagnosis and treatment planning.

Examine how you, as a mental health professional, would respond to Maria and David and what your ethical duties are.

Week 2 Discussion

The Problem of Pain

Reflect.png         Reflect: Address the following in your post. Take the role of a professional utilizing applied behavioral science methods to help clients manage pain. Create a fictitious scenario in which a client is referred to you by her or his family physician for an applied psychology treatment to help manage pain. Your client has been taking prescription medications for pain management and desires to reduce the need for the medication.

Identify the type of pain your client is experiencing for which applications of applied behavioral science are appropriate (e.g., arthritis, bone or joint pain, muscle pain, fibromyalgia, migraine headaches, cancer pain, post-surgery, etc.).

Describe any psychological factors and emotional states of your client which appear to impact her or his mental and physical health (e.g., depression, anxiety, general level of satisfaction with life).

Indicate the client’s locus of control and health motivation. Utilize terminology outlined in your reading.

Identify any additional stressors your client is experiencing that may exacerbate her or his pain experience.

Based on the reading, identify at least one pain management technique you believe would best reduce the pain experience in this situation.

Examine the application of your selected pain management technique in relation to the same situation within a different culture. Explain the role of the perception of pain and the impact of culture on perception of pain, identifying and usage trends of applied behavioral science unique to different groups.

Your initial post must be a minimum of 200 words. Forensic Psychology and Criminal Profiling

Doing so will introduce you to topics in the field of forensic psychology.             

Reflect Icon        Reflect: For this discussion, you will select one high-profile serial killer from real life or character from a television show, movie, book, game, and so forth.          

Write Icon           Write: Briefly describe this person/character, including the medium (real life, television, movie, book, etc.) from which he or she comes, why you selected him or her, his or her background, and the background of the crimes he or she committed. Based on your reading this week, define, in your own words, forensic psychology as a specific example of applied behavioral science, and describe how forensic psychology could have been helpful in this case. Identify trends in forensic psychology that would prove helpful. Discuss why profiling is or is not a science. Examine the similarities and differences between what you have read about forensic psychologists’ work and the way television and movies present their work. Identify ethical considerations forensic psychologists need to consider.

DQ1 School Shooting Aftermath

(Links to an external site.) video, review the School Violence Prevention: Tips for Parents & Educators (Links to an external site.) web page, complete Chapter 7: Educational Psychology in your text, review any relevant Instructor Guidance, and interact with the Educational Psychology and Career Counseling learning objects located in the left navigation bar for this week. In your post, you will examine uses and applications of applied behavioral science to help a school in the aftermath of a school shooting.

The students in his classes are upset at the news of the shooting and that the student has been identified as a recent transfer from their own school. He comes to you, the school psychologist, for direction.

Identify trends that may provide insights into and assistance with coping in the aftermath of this type of tragic event.

Reflect.png         Reflect: For this discussion, think of one leader (e.g., drill sergeant, teacher, family member, coach, supervisor, mentor, or politician) who has directly or indirectly influenced your career/work attitudes and behaviors in a positive way.
