Choose one of the following three real-world cases where investigators used digital forensics to convict the criminal. You need to review your chosen case, determine and explain how the process of digital forensics was used, and consider and evaluate how investigators handled the case. When conducting your review and evaluation, consider the legal and ethical components of your chosen case, in addition to the technological capabilities at the time and now. Did the investigators take the best approach with the technology they had available?
- Case 1: Consider the murder of Kari Baker in 2006 and conviction of her husband four years later. What did the police overlook in their original investigation that digital forensics could’ve helped with? What new technologies are available today that could have prevented the four-year gap between the crime and Matt Baker’s conviction?
- Case 2: The arson investigation of Ross Compton in 2016 and the admissibility of personal medical data as evidence. Should a person’s personal medical data be admissible as evidence to use for their conviction? Would this be reliable evidence?
- Case 3:In 2013, Brad Cooper’s first-degree murder conviction was overturned on the basis that his defense team was not allowed to dispute evidence found on Cooper’s computer, and that that evidence could’ve been tampered with. Explain how that evidence could have been compromised and what you think could’ve been done to better protect and preserve it.
