Given that this is a take home exam, it is expected that you will be accurate and precise with your analysis. You are allowed to use your notes and textbook. Please provide page numbers for material pulled directly from the textbook. I do not require or recommend using outside material including online resources. If you do use any outside sources, you are required to provide full citation of these materials. Remember that all students will be held to the standards of academic integrity required of college students and participants in this class.

Option 1 From 1914 through the present, the United States military has developed into an international police force. To justify this, our leaders have often stressed the need to defend our freedom at home and to protect others from oppression. Using specific examples discuss how America has responded to various threats to freedom (both real and perceived) since the outbreak of the First World War. Do these threats justify America’s rise as a worldwide leader? Please focus your answer on international developments since 1914. (Please include AT LEAST one example from WWI, WWII, the Cold War, AND post-Cold War events)

Option 2 Since the Progressive Era the United States government has increased national regulation of the American economy. To justify this, national leaders often stress the need for government authority to balance wealth and promote stability. Using specific examples discuss how government institutions have responded to various economic and moral issues over the past 100 years. Do you believe government regulation is needed to prevent class conflict? Please focus your answer 1917 to the present? *hint – are all men/women created equal in America?

Option 3 Resistance to Jim Crow laws took many forms in the early and mid-twentieth century. Using specific examples discuss the various attempts to break the racial barrier of segregation. Who were the important leaders and symbols? What were their methods for attacking racial ideology in America? What factors contributed to the successes of the Civil Rights movement in legislation. What effect has this had on America’s racial line? Where do we stand now? Hint * Have definitions of accepted and expected racism changed over time?
