An Apple iPhone was taken to forensics for examination, but scientists were unable to gain access to the phone due to its security features. The manufacturing company Apple refused to assist in the investigation due to the privacy concerns for their customers and the security of their phones (codes), which resulted in a lawsuit between the U.S. government and Apple. If you recall from Unit III, the police were called to investigate the scene of a death in which a mother reported that she had found her teenage son dead on the floor in his bedroom. There was a large pool of blood on the carpet near the son’s head and possible signs of a struggle. These signs include scratches on the victim’s body, torn clothing, clumps of the victim’s hair and some unidentified hair on the floor, and a nightstand laying on its side with a broken lamp next to it. In addition, some drug paraphernalia is discovered inside the victim’s nightstand.

In this assignment, you will write an essay in which you describe which of the various tools and techniques that we discussed in this unit would be needed to process and analyze the physical evidence found at the scene. Be sure to be very specific about the type of evidence being processed and analyzed and what you may discover about that evidence based on the tools and techniques used. Imagine that you are a crime scene investigator, and you have been asked to present at a forensic science conference due to your department’s recent success in garnering a murder conviction in a decade-old murder case. In the case, a female body had been dumped at a construction site with signs of sexual assault and strangulation. Unfortunately, at the time that the body was discovered, there were plenty of suspects, but no one could be positively identified as the murderer. Recently, due to new information being uncovered in the case, the evidence—which included paint, metal, and soil samples, DNA evidence taken from the victim and her assailant, and forensic serology evidence—was re-examined, and a positive ID could finally be established. A suspect was then taken into custody and subsequently convicted of the crimes of rape and murder.

In your presentation, you will offer a brief description of the evidence and how it was collected and analyzed as well as how forensic serology and DNA evidence were used to positively identify the individual who was ultimately convicted.
