Case Study: Motivation, Communication, and Information Processing Theory
You are a consultant working with a division I soccer team. Generally, this team is ranked among the top 10 in NCAA standings; however, over the past few months, the team has struggled. Not only have they struggled to win games on the field, but the coach believes that part of the reason they are struggling on the field is because the two best players on the team are dealing with distractions. Their main forward (scorer) has been having trouble concentrating or narrowing her focus on the field. She went through a family tragedy and has also been struggling with her schoolwork after the tragedy. The best defender on the team has also been struggling. But she has been struggling with her motivation to play because the motivational climate of the team does not align with some of the ways she is generally motivated. This has impacted her mood during all team functions including dinners, practices, and conditioning sessions as well as her play on the field.
In 500-750 words, assess the relationship of this team and its two-star athletes.
For athlete 1 (scorer), interpret different theories of motivation and how her off-the-field emotions and mood could be impacting her play on the field. Recommend strategies to help this athlete narrow her focus to reach peak performance.
For athlete 2 (defender), explain how information processing theory can be used to maintain a motivational climate for this athlete on her team. Explain how her mood and emotions have affected her communication with her teammates/coaches, including how this might be impacting her performance. Recommend strategies to help the defender gain and maintain motivation.
