COMM347 INNOVATIVE COMMUNICATION AND CULTURE

Module 4 Discussion

DQ1 Reading and Writing in the Overwhelming Information Age

Photograph of an African American woman who is smiling while reading from a piece of paper. Retrieved from Encyclopædia Britannica ImageQuest: http://quest.eb.com/search/154_2890024/1/154_2890024/citeHow we read and write and what we read and write are changing due to new communication technologies and social influences. As we engage in this discussion, I want you to think about the larger implications for culture … and how newer and evolving forms of communication can impact and mold culture.  This activity aligns with module outcomes 1 and 2.

Please choose one of the following to answer as thoroughly as possibly, using evidence from our readings to support your own critical thinking:

Because so much of our communication online is about ourselves – selfies, what we did, where we went, what we ate, our accomplishments, our kids, etc. – because, as a culture, we don’t do as much serious, lengthy, literary reading (which forces you to put yourself in other shoes and worlds) … do you think that we are becoming a less empathetic culture? Feel free to pull in self-reflection and things that you have observed.

Joanna Scott’s “The Virtues of Difficult Fiction” is a rigorous defense of the old-fashioned reading experience of the novel. She argues, “Fiction provides an essential kind of knowledge that can only be acquired by careful reading.” In an age in which interest in the novel and the complex, lengthy reading experience are arguably waning, do you think we have cause for alarm? Are we losing something essential for our culture? Explain your position as fully as possible.

Our article about the “Reading Brain” takes a more scientific view of our reading issue. Based on these findings, which emphasize the benefits of the traditional reading experience, do you see the loss of old-fashioned reading as a potential cultural crisis or not?

DQ2 Don’t Say “Me-Me”: Memes (pr: MEEMS) as a form of Cultural Communication

Image of a cat meme.  The words ‘the worst part of my Monday is hearing you complain about yours’ are superimposed on an image of an overweight, frowning cat. Open Access at Cattime.com: http://cattime.com/cat-facts/lifestyle/1737-top-25-best-funny-grumpy-cat-memesMemes are those short, humorous comments atop an image that have become pervasive online, particularly on social media. And while they may seem unimportant and jokey, any kind of communication that is that ubiquitous and that viral (spread by users) warrants some critical thinking and analysis. You should explore examples of them on sites such as www.memes.com (Links to an external site.). You may also have some that you already know that you have used or seen (and that have given you a chuckle). In this discussion, feel free to examine memes or any other type of humorous images that you find to be ubiquitous on the Internet and/or social media.  This activity aligns with module outcome 2.

Please search out two Internet memes or other types of humorous, commonly shared images as supporting examples for your thoughts in this discussion. You should provide the memes in your response. Please be sure that the memes are relatively tasteful and have no profanity, etc.

The basic question I would like you to answer at length is this: How are memes or other humorous images (as a form of communication) useful for studying culture? Keep in mind the humor – and that humor can have an important social and cultural function. Humor is an essential component of the human condition. Also, keep in mind the viral nature of memes and other images, how they rely upon users to spread them and how they illustrate that kind of “hive-mind” mentality that we often see in online communication. Your best observation spot for how memes are used and spread is social media. (I think that word “social” is important here – for humor has a social role.) Lastly, you may want to consider how memes combine image and text. Some of our ideas from the visual communication module (Mod Three) may be useful here.
